Zoological Medicine Diagnostic (ZMDx) Laboratory
The Zoological Medicine Diagnostic (ZMDx) Laboratory at University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine is a full service molecular diagnostic laboratory specializing in the detection of pathogens of captive and free-ranging wildlife.

We offer one of the most diverse assemblages of molecular diagnostics available for non-domestic species, with tests optimized specifically for avian and non-avian reptiles, amphibians, terrestrial and marine mammals, fish, elasmobranchs, and some invertebrates. In addition to screening for known pathogens, many of our assays were designed with broad-reactivity in mind to detect novel pathogens.
We pride ourselves on providing the most accurate and comprehensive molecular testing to veterinarians serving zoos, aquaria, exotic pet-owners, and breeders. We also routinely work with wildlife biologists for testing of free-ranging animals. Our top priority is providing disease information to clinicians, to hopefully improve and maintain the quality of life of the animals they serve.
In an effort to best serve our clients, we have recently completed a full redesign of our website, as well as submission and reporting forms. We hope this will make finding the information you need easier. However, as always, if you have any questions regarding our tests, results, or test selection, please email us at VM-zmdx@ad.ufl.edu.
If you need any assistance, please email the ZMDx lab directly using this link:
